Most modern Android phones and newer iPhones (iPhone 7 and up) support NFC. However, some older or entry-level phones may not support it, or require NFC to be enabled in settings. Background NFC tag reading is available in iPhones released in 2018 and later. And so, if borrowing an iPhone, be sure that the spectator has an iPhone XS or newer. The most recent iPhones have flat edges and no home button, so perhaps aim for one of those to be safe if unsure how to tell them apart.

On iPhone, if the phone is not on silent there will be a short audible sound indicating an NFC tag has been detected. Therefore it is good practice to ensure that the borrowed phone is on silent to avoid this. iPhones can be muted by flicking the silent switch on the left side of the device towards the back of the phone. Android devices differ based on the phone model.

Nope. The tag is completely hidden and the object looks and feels normal. Obviously your own choreography will be needed to disguise "the moment", but it's an easily learned skill.
